Teatro Paraguas, Santa Fe Danceworks, and La Cocina de Balam will host a second annual Day of the Dead event on Sunday, November 1, 2015 from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm, featuring traditional and special dances, poetry in Spanish, live music, a procession and an altar honoring the ancestors.
Actors James Stake, Dan Bohnhorst, Crawford MacCallum and Balam of Teatro Paraguas will perform poems in Spanish honoring La Muerte, with projected translations in English.
Israel Azul Haros Lopez of Waterhummingbirdhouse will perform a comic Chicano riff on living and dying in East L.A.
Thelma Arguello of Grupo Leyendas will lead a troupe of dancers and actors in performing a bolero entitled Bodas Negras, featuring David Lopez of Heart and Soul Dance and Fitness Studio and Xochitl Ehrl of Santa Fe Danceworks. The group will also perform a traditional flamenco dance choreographed by Mina Fajardo as well as the traditional Mexican dance La Petenera . Antonina Romp, with her Ballet Folklorico dance troupe Los Niños de Santa Fe, will perform La Vida es un Juego.
Live music will be performed by Jordan Wax and Lone Piñon, Melange, Yves C. Lucero and Lena Stavely, and Thelma Arguello and Mario Reynolds.
La Cocina de Balam in Santa Fe will cater a community feast, following a special procession and ceremonial blessing.
A community altar will be open from 1:00 pm through the end of the festivities. People are encouraged to bring offerings for their ancestors. Performances begin at 4:00 pm, and the community feast starts at 6:30 pm.
The event takes place at Teatro Paraguas and Santa Fe Danceworks, both located at 3205 Calle Marie off Henry Lynch Road.
Tickets are $10 for the performances, and $7 for the community feast. Children 12 and under may attend the feast for free.
